Customer Rating: Summary: One of my favorite albums of all time Comment: My happiest memories of childhood are Christmases, and this album was always playing in the background. This album is simply transcendent. If I had only one disc to own, this would be it, period.
(p.s. I don't give a flying you-know-what if you found this review helpful or not, so don't bother voting!)
Customer Rating: Summary: Very Special Music For a Very Special Season Comment: I first heard Alfred Burt's Christmas songs when I was a youngster and I've loved them ever since. Quite simply, this is music that moves deeply within, profoundly yet gently striking chords in your heart and soul. The harmonies are beautiful, the lyrics are simple, the presentation is magical. A Cappella should always sound this good. Burt's music hearkens back to a time when music about the birth of Christ was written with great emotion guided by the kind of deep reverance that is reflected in too few other Christmas songs. Thankfully, Burt's music stands apart from the contemporary songs normally presented by radio and recordings over the Holidays. Like Handel's Messiah, these songs will transport you to a place filled with warmth and deep emotion. Rated 5-stars because they don't have six.
Customer Rating: Summary: Love Alfred Burt Carols Comment: Alfred Burt Carols are presented a capella and beautifully arranged. A favorite of mine since 1985. It's just not Christmas without listening to these songs.
Customer Rating: Summary: a voice teacher and early music fan Comment: ALFRED BURT: AN AMERICAN HERITAGE!
On February 7, 1954, Alfred Burt lost his battle with lung cancer, and the same year Columbia Records made the first recording of the Burt carols, 'The Christmas Mood'. These carols will be evergreen because they focus on the family and the positive values of the Christmas season.
The have been internationally accepted by choirs everywhere and television personalities. They have been recorded by such singers as : Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Andy Williams, Julie Andrews, etc. etc. When John Williams was the director of the Boston Pops, he featured these songs each year in his Christmas programs and referred to them as "mini-masterpieces".
Fred Waring and his 'Pennsylvanians' recorded many of these and that did a great deal to make them well known. The arrangements on this disc by Brinley Bethel and Jimmy Joyce includes the original composition in the third verse of each carol.
The Jimmy Joyce 16-voice A Cappela Choir does a good job of performing these carols in a straightforward manner, for that's the manner in which they were written!!
Customer Rating: Summary: This is Christmas Comment: As a companion to The Christmas Mood, it will bring joy to your heart.
This Christmas music is lively and joyful.
