Summary: (Another) Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle Choir
Comment: You could scarcely be faulted for thinking the Mormon Taberncle Choir had cornered the market on choral Christmas albums. There are four or five seasonal albums by the MTC listed on Amazon, so it would seem to be a specialty of theirs. This is the only one of their Christmas CDs that I have more than a passing acquaintance with, however, and it's fairly impressive. And not nearly as showy as I might have expected. I think I may have caught the Choir on TV years ago and found them bombastic and oppressive. But then, back in those days, I really wasn't all that into choral music at all. And then too, the audio on TVs just wasn't all that good (we're talking late 60s here). As far as this record goes, I only have a few real caveats. The selections are not all that imaginative--there are few surprises here. Well, "Carol of the Birds" is NOT that much of a standard, I'll admit. But really, the only new discovery, for me, here is "Lippai/Up On the Mountain," which is a real find. On the other hand, "Jingle Bells"--even with a spruced up arrangement--probably needs to be retired for, oh, I dunno, let's say a millennium or two.

Summary: They Censored the Lyrics
Comment: You know, you can have the most awesome choir in the world, yet it could rise as a foul odor to the Living God. The Mormons do not believe that Jesus Christ is God come in the flesh, so they eliminated the second verse and replaced it with brass alone. Here is what they left out...

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

This CD will ring hollow for many. I suggest looking to other works. If they can't handle the entire song, they should have just left it out and sang "Here Comes Santa Claus" instead.

Summary: Take your breath away this Christmas!
Comment: I love Christmas music and I love the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, so this CD is one of my favorites! Some of the songs are not the traditional carols I grew up with, but they are no less enchanting. This season when we celebrate the birth of the Savior, I highly recommend that you add this CD to your collection and get lost in the true spirit of Christmas.

Summary: Awesome Performance
Comment: This is CD is one of THE BEST CDs I have ever listened when it comes to Chorlal Music. Two of my favorit arrangements are Jingle Bells and Lippai/Upon the Mountain. These two songs were arranged by Mr. Donald Ripplinger and it is always a pleasure to listen to them. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir set a pretty high standard of how sacred songs should be sung. Excellent Job! These songs can always be sung in church and they will for sure tickle the sensible strings of the human heart. If you are thinking about buying this CD...DO IT WITHOUT HESITATION. You will not be dissapointed.

Summary: Alternative Arrangements
Comment: May be a interesting choice for those bored with traditional melodies and arrangements. Not a sing-a-long due to variations. Mix keeps your hand on the volume control.
