Summary: good old school anime but bad dubbing
Comment: Grendizer, created in 1975,76, is propably the most popular Japanese animated show on the planet. It had some sucess in it's native land, but the show really took off when it was sold overseas to many countries(I think France was the first to buy the show's rights). It made an insane amount of money for creator Go Nagai (Devilman,Cutey Honey) and Toei Animation (Sailor Moon, Mazinger Z)and It's propably still airing somewhere as we speak.
Although Grendizer is based on the Go Nagai's popular heroic robot manga series, the animated version looks far superior in comparison to the comics. for one thing the show looks more realistic (very similar to the groundbreaking gatchaman series that aired a few years earlier). Toei animation propably decided to dump Go Nagai's cartoony style and went for something more mature more serious in tone.
As popular as grendizer is, it failed to make a real dent in the north american market only gainning a small cult following. Under the title Force Five and a poor english dub the show didn't really catch on. From what I've heard only 30 episodes (of the 76) were to be aired. these factors are good enough reason to see why the show had such a hard time getting good ratings.
This english version is available in vhs casette; only the first two shows in ep playback though.(an earlier casette had two more episode on top of the others) these cassettes are really hard to find so good luck if your interested.
Recently, two beautiful dvd box sets of the show were released in japan that are now sold out( they were limited editions). these are very expansive (500 dollars canadian for one box) on top of that you'll need region free dvd player to play them and there are propably no english subtitles.
Happy Hunting

Summary: The best robot...
Comment: This is one of the best super robots i've ever seen. Unfortunetly, there are only 2 chapters in this VHS. I saw a whole 85 minute movie of this series back in '84. The characters are the same at the begining, also the plot is the same, but the sequence of events changes and consequently some of the fights. Another thing is that i saw it in Spanish and the quality of sound was much better than in english. Still, i hope to find the whole series one day and remember what it was to be a kid...

Summary: I think some of the problem is
Comment: that the guy that saw the french version and is mad because the english version is a tad different.

As far as which was first...showtime.... the original grendizer started in '75...

Since no one has pumped money into redubbing this, the best opportunity that exists is this video, otherwise learn Japanese.

Summary: Orion Quest is forced to defend his adopted planet
Comment: If you don't make the mistake of watching this video back to back with the Gaiking video, you will enjoy a good stand alone series, and won't spot the similarities between the two videos.
The only problems I had with the video was the hot head pilot flying his flying saucer and has to be rescued by Orion Quest later in part one of the video and the crazy ranch manager.
Other then that the story is quite good and moves at a fast pace. It details the background of Orion Quest and why he has come to earth. I wish that more videos of this series would be released so I can add to my collection of Giant Robot videos.
