Summary: One of the best anime ever
Comment: When I first decided to watch the videos, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had a good vibe about it, though (yeah, I know, it sounds weird), so I checked them out. The result: I fell in love with Super Dimension Century Orguss.
The characterization is great, the storyline is actually fairly original, and action moves along nicely. Character and ship designs are cool, but you'll never see them again, as it is very much an 80's anime style.
Even the opening and ending music is awesome. "Gypsy", the closing song, is one of the best pieces of music I've heard in any language. Speaking of language, I am a diehard fan of subtitles, but the dubs on these videos are very well done. I was impressed.
The anime is better than Robotech (Super Dimensional Fortress Macross is unrelated to Super Dimension Century Orguss, for the record) and the other mid-80's sci fi anime.
The artwork is noticably from the 80's, but really the only complaint is the lack of extensive landscape. The animation is actually very well done, however.
L.A. Renditions, the company that was releasing Orguss in America and Canada, went out of the anime business in 1993. That means Orguss stopped at volume 8, only halfway through the series. Manga Entertainment (then US Manga Corps) picked up the rights to some of the anime from L.A. Renditions (like Appleseed), but they decided to pass on Orguss. Animeigo, the company that is releasing the original Macross series (Robotech) on DVD, is the best bet for rereleasing the series. I've got my fingers crosse
