Customer Rating: Summary: A 'must' for any general-interest or young adult collection strong in gay issues Comment: GAY AMERICA: STRUGGLE FOR EQUALITY is billed as the first gay history book published specifically for teens, but it's reviewed here for its importance to all age groups, and should be considered a foundation title for any collection seeking to include a thorough and simple history of gay rights and struggles in America. Period photos lavishly illustrate a historically accurate survey of gay life in the U.S., blending first person accounts with stories of discrimination and changing perceptions. A 'must' for any general-interest or young adult collection strong in gay issues.

Linas Alsenas gives us quite a gift just in time for the holidays--a book about the milestones of gay and lesbian life written especially for teenaged readers. The book spans 125 years and shows, with many illustrations from the archives of history, how much our influence has had on American life. "Gay America" chronicles our history whether it deals with the quest for equal rights, political gains, or just purely social issues.
The book begins in colonial times and covers the Victorian era, the 1920's, the Kinsey report, Stonewall, the AIDS crisis and moves to the present debate over gay marriage. What Alsenas does is instill in us a sense of pride as we read our history and the author shows how much progress has been made in the last 100 years.
So many of our young are not aware of the struggles we have had and this is a wonderful way to show them that the road to equality is long and hard and even though we have made a great deal of progress in the last one hundred years that we still have a long way to go.
