Customer Rating: Summary: Great movie reviews, but too small print Comment: I buy Maltin's Movie Guide every four years. When it arrived this year I was shocked at the much smaller size, thus smaller print. Does this book come in more than 1 size? I would be willing to pay the extra price for the larger book. I don't need glasses to read, but for this new edition I need a magnifying glass! I love the reviews and rely on them when deciding which movies to watch on TV.
Customer Rating: Summary: Indispensible reference guide you will constantly refer to. Comment: Believe it or not this is the first time I have ever purchased a Leonard Maltin Movie Guide. This is the 30th edition of the guide that was first published way back in 1969 and it is now updated annually. "Leonard Maltin's 2009 Movie Guide" features 17,000+ entries including more than 300 brand new ones. Just in case you have not run across this book before the films are listed in alphabetical order and provide you with such pertinent information as the year of release, running time, the director, the major stars of the film and whether it was filmed in color or black and white. Maltin then goes on to give an ever-so-brief synopsis and review of the film and and rates the film on a scale of one to four stars which the worst films designated as a BOMB. Finally, there are easy to read symbols whereby Maltin indicates if the film is available on DVD, VHS and laserdisc.
Now that I know that "Leonard Maltin's 2009 Movie Guide" is in the house I find myself referring to it frequently. My wife and I enjoy viewing the films of the 1940's and 1950's and we are always on the lookout for films from this period that we have never seen before. While I do realize that there are severe space constraints in a book like this I just wish the reviews were a tad bit longer. Otherwise, i have found "Leonard Matlin's 2009 Movie Guide" to be a nice little addition to our reference shelf. One cautionary note: the print in this book is extremely small. This fact may preclude people with poor eyesight from being able to use this book. But all in all, this is a book I am quite pleased to recommend.
Customer Rating: Summary: For a limited demographic Comment: I bought this for my father, but he was unhappy with the small print. Next time I'm trying "Videohound."
Customer Rating: Summary: F#@k Leonard Maltin.....JK Comment: This is definitely a good buy, but there is one ridiculous fact about this book: They give the RIDICULOUSLY overrated movie 2001: A Space Odyssey four stars and give movies like The Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump two and a half. The reason they gave for giving this rating to Forrest Gump was something about how dumb it is that he was on-hand for all these events in history. HELLO? That's the whole comedic point of the movie! Anyway, it's still a definite good book to have, that was the only problem I had with it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Product Unusable Comment: Leonard Maltin's reviews are excellent. Nevertheless, this product is essentially unusable. In an effort to keep the page count down, the publisher has used a very small type face that I have difficulty reading even though I have a full correction in my reading glasses.
The book is adequate if one wishes to look up a single item. Browsing? Forget about it!
I have a 1999 edition of the Leonard Maltin book and it is a delight to use and browse. I have browsed it so much that its paperback binding has begun to fall apart. I plan to have my old edition professionally rebound and to donate my new edition to the book drive of my local library.
Let someone else get the eyestrain!
