Summary: An interesting vampire tale
Comment: Sunshine is a post apocalyptic vampire tale told with much detail. I fell in love with the writer's style and humor. I plowed right through this for the first 200 pages and then it became repetitive. If there had been a few edits, the whole story would have been perfect for me. The main character, Sunshine, has a great voice and I would probably enjoy a sequel to this.

Summary: Good read...except for the overdetailed narrative.
Comment: This is one of the vampire genre's better books. Robin McKinley succeeds in bringing to life an alternate world where vampires and demons coexist with humans in a Sunnydale-type environment. Rae "Sunshine" Seddon is a twentysomething working in her stepfather's coffee house. Her normal life is shattered, however, when she is kidnapped by a gang of vampires and held captive. It becomes clear to Sunshine that she is to be her cellmate's dinner, another vampire imprisoned by the gang. He chooses not to make a meal of her and instead implores her to tell him stories to distract them from their predicament.
From that moment on a bond is forged between the two which serves to protect them from the wrath of the enemy vampires. The story becomes more and more spellbinding but that magic is sometimes broken by the author's overlong narrative about the town and it's human, demon, or partblood inhabitants slowing down the pace of the story. The growing attraction between the vampire Constantine and Sunshine is described in delicious detail but is then interrupted by the author's narratives on were-beasts that never appear in the story. I found myself skipping whole paragraphs just to pick up the thread of the main story.
The climax is gripping and the final pages so filled with sexual tension between the hero and heroine that it seems certain they will surrender to one another. But our author leaves the door open on that one and there isn't a real sense of closure. The loose ends leaves more questions than the conclusion leaves answers.
I think this would make a great series if McKinley can iron out the details and lose the overly long narratives.

Comment: To start out I'll have to say I devour books. If I had enough books I could read two or three a day as I have done before and read up to five simultaneously but Sunshine was a rare book that captured my entire attention and left me feeling dazed and bereft for days afterwards. I had fallen in love with Constantine and (as strange as this might sound) felt a kind of friendship towards Sunshine. I may not be the average reviewer opinion however, seeing as how I see vampire and fantasy books in general as my air, but this book was written so beautifully it seems almost a crime that others not at least try it. I re-read books all the time as well and I have to say I've read Sunshine at least fifteen times and I love it more and more each time so those of you who are wavering about whether or not to read it please do you may fall in love as I did.

Summary: Read this instead of Twilight!
Comment: This is the book I recommend over and over to my adult friends who just "love Twilight". I read this novel long before Twilight was published, so it is the vampire romance by which I judge all other vampire romance novels. This novel is beautifully written with a wonderfully strong female protagonist who is reasonable and real. So fantastic, I've been waiting for a sequel ever since. Please, please, please, Ms. McKinley, revisit this world!

Summary: A Novel To Read Again And Again
Comment: A splendid book, that easily draws you in and then keeps you tightly within its grasp, to the point that it is nearly impossible to put down. While there is a great deal of inner monologue, I feel that this is part of what makes it so successful as a read. It is as if Rae has taken the seat next to you, and is telling you her story directly. The complex, information filled sentences make it feel more realistic, allowing you to hear her voice in your head, explaining or ranting about this or that. Delightful, magical, touching, and incredibly sincere, Sunshine has been in my reread pile since its original release, and I'm certain it will remain there as I go through it for the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth time. I would recommend this re-release to anyone who has enjoyed McKinley's previous novels, and to those looking for a witty and well executed fantasy novel. You need look no farther than this.
As a side note: I just received my copy of this new edition, and must point out that the cover art is rather stunning.
